This is a truly unique experience; while you can see glow-worms elsewhere in New Zealand, and you can paddle a sea kayak in many places around the world, this is the only place when the two combine for a magical evening. The tour is great fun with great refreshments, beautiful scenery, fantastic bird-life, and awesome glow-worms.Enjoy wine from the award winning Mills Reef winery, delicate New Zealand cheeses and refreshments on the edge of Lake McLaren. Your guide will prepare and brief you on how to kayak effectively before launching you onto picturesque Lake McLaren at twilight to paddle to the mysterious glow-worm canyon. The glow-worms are situated in a narrow, high-sided canyon at the top of the lake, not in a cave, so this tour only departs once a day before sunset so by the time you get to the glow-worm canyon it’s completely dark, as required to see the glow-worms to the best effect.Paddling a kayak may be something you have tried before, but you probably haven’t kayaked at night (head-torches provided) and certainly have not kayaked in the dark to see constellations of glow-worms. It is a fully guided kayak tour, with professional guides leading your group and providing a fascinating and informative brief about the life-cycle and peculiarities of the New Zealand fungus gnat (glow-worms).This is truly a magical and unique experience not to be missed.

Once your cruise ship docks at Tauranga Harbour, embark on another kind of water adventure with a relaxing kayak ride along the Wairoa River. Grab your swimsuits and towels and take off with your expert guide to learn about the fertile stretch of New Zealand’s North Island. As you drift along the upper reaches of the Wairoa River, spot an old timber mill and learn about how locals transported kauri logs along this route in the 1800s. Stop on a river bank for cheese and fruit, and take in the quiet beauty before heading back toward land.Your Tauranga shore excursion begins with pickup at the Port of Tauranga. Take a short drive in your air-conditioned minivan to the Waimarino Adventure Park, where you will begin your relaxing, easy kayaking experience along the Wairoa River. En route, you’ll learn more about Mt Maunganui and Tauranga from your guide. Once you arrive, listen to a short safety briefing before hitting the water in your kayak. Once you slide into the water, the pastoral beauty of this ancient river immediately captivates you. Wairoa means ‘long water’ in Maori, a circuit of streams and rivers that once served as the main source of food and transportation for Maori settlements. In the 19th century, Europeans established timber mills that exported logs of kauri trees. Pass an old mill as your guide points out the native vegetation that surrounds you, including the now-protected native trees. Don’t forget to bring your camera: dry bags are provided to protect your equipment.Perhaps the best photo op waits on the banks of the river, where you and your fellow kayakers stop for gourmet refreshments including cheese, crackers, fruit and juice. Discover the beautiful Mt Maunganui from the ocean. This is a cultural experience on both stand up paddle boards and waka ama (outrigger canoes), delivered by tangata whenua (people of the land) of Tauranga. This experience is around 3 hours long, with approximately 2 hours on the water. You will be collected from the gates of the Port of Tauranga by one of our qualified, local guides.  You will then be taken to our beach station on Pilot Bay, just a stone's throw from the gate, and experience a Whakatau (informal cultural welcome), before changing into your swimwear and starting the ocean activities. Stand Up Paddle Boarding - Experienced paddle boarders can grab some gear and head straight out onto the water, while the beginners receive a brief lesson.  All paddlers will then join together to head to the base of Mauao (the mountain) and hear the Legend of Mauao, a story of both love and loss.  On the return paddle, you will have an opportunity to try some cool tricks on the boards shown off by our skilled instructors.Waka Ama - Paddlers will start with an onshore lesson, then board the waka ama (outrigger canoe) with our experienced steerers.  You will then put your paddling techniques to practice while circuiting the stunning Waikorire (Pilot Bay).  You will hear about how our Maori people used similar waka to migrate from the Pacific Islands to New Zealand. Song is a big part of our culture, so expect to be serenaded on the ocean and invited to join in on some traditional waka ama chants. At the end of the session, we will have a brief Poroporoaki (farewell) at our beach station, where you will receive a traditional gift from us. We will then accompany you back to the port gates, and leave you to enjoy the rest of your day at our beautiful Mt Maunganui. * Towels available on the day.

Visit two of Rotorua’s most famous sites, Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland and Whakarewarewa (The Living Maori Village), on a private tour with an informative guide when your cruise ship docks in Tauranga. Marvel at geothermal wonders such as steaming volcanic vents, boiling mud ponds and natural hot pools in an otherworldly range of colors. Then learn about Maori culture and history, and see landmarks including the Pohutu and Prince of Wales geysers during your visit to Whakarewarewa village. After your private guide picks you up from the dock in Tauranga, enjoy a scenic 1.5-hour drive to the Wai-O-Tapu geothermal region, home to some of New Zealand's most spectacular geothermal landmarks. Before the eruption of the Tarawera Volcano in 1886, Wai-O-Tapu was famous for a natural feature known as the Pink and White Terraces. The eruption destroyed the terraces and created today’s landscape of steaming hot springs, bubbling geysers and pools of vibrant turquoise, orange, gold and olive-green water. Take in the geothermal park on a walking tour with your guide, who shows you around Wai-O-Tapu on your choice of easy walks that last anywhere from 30 to 75 minutes. You might catch the daily eruption of the Lady Knox geyser and admire the colorful Champagne Pool and Artist’s Palette. Next up, visit Whakarewarewa, an authentic Maori village that showcases the traditions of the Tuhourangi/Ngati Wahiao people. Take a tour of the village with a local Maori guide who shares the history and culture of the local people. See key sites in the village, hear stories about the geothermal environment, and learn how the villagers have harnessed the energy of the hot springs and steam vents for cooking and bathing. You may even see the Pohutu Geyser in action, as the 100-foot (30-meter) geyser erupts up to 20 times a day. You'll have plenty of time for photo ops and a lunch break (own expense) during your shore excursion. At the end of a fascinating day out, enjoy the scenery
