Interactive Prawn Park with Prawn Fishing in Taupo
Enjoy a small group, guided tour of the nursery and hatchery at Huka Prawn Park learning about how a tropical breed of prawns are farmed in a subtropical environment. You can hand-feed baby prawns and you'll be given a demonstration on how to catch prawns. You'll then enjoy all-day access to the prawn fishing park where you can catch as many prawns as you can. Anything you catch is yours to keep. You can also explore the entire prawn park where you'll find a range of fun interactive water features including pedal boats, trout feeding, a riverside walk and a geothermal foot bath.Enjoy the flexibility of a day pass to Huka Prawn Park. In 2008 The Blue Duck Project was founded on The Tongariro River by TRR owner Garth and some friends. The aim was to trap pests to protect the Whio (Blue Duck) of which there are only 3000 nationally. This project has been unbelievably successful with duck numbers on the river now reaching to almost 30 pairs. Join us in discovering how the project has achieved the outcomes that it has on this unique rafting trip. Combine the grade 3 whitewater with an Eco experience. These are small personal tours with no more than 10 people per tripYou will start the day by meeting at our rafting base in Turangi, where we will equip you in all the gear necessary to keep you warm before we drive you out to the river. After an on-shore safety briefing you will be on your way, with the first rapid just around the bend. While you are tackling the heart-pounding roller coaster rapids you will be told all about our Blue Duck Project and hopefully spot some Blue Ducks in real life. Along the way you will be given the opportunity to go ashore and check the trapping lines. You can do your part for the project and help us check that the automatic traps are all charged with gas and good to go, before heading on downstream to navigate more rapids. As well as putting in the work $10 per person from these trips is donated directly to The Blue Duck Project Charitable trust. You will meet us at our base in Acacia Bay, where we will load your bike then set off by road to Kinloch to ride the W2K (Kinloch to Whakaipo Bay) section of the Great Lake Trail. Your ride will take approximately 2 - 2.5 hours, ending at the beautiful Whakaipo Bay where you gourmet lunch awaits you. After lunch, you will head down to the crystal clear waters of Lake Taupo to begin your kayak trip to the famous Maori Rock Carvings at Mine Bay. Allow up to 8 hours for this trip. We will shuttle you and your bikes from our Taupo Kayaking Adventures base in Acacia Bay to Kinloch, where the W2K section (Kinloch to Whakaipo Bay) of the Great Lake Trail begins. Follow the markers along the marina waterfront and then up a gully to Boojum Dell. The mountain biking trail climbs steadily up through native bush and onto the headland, providing great views across the lake and back down into Kinloch. At the junction of the Headland Loop there is a toilet and a map.From here you continue to ride down the undulating pumice trail through native bush towards Whakaipo Bay. There was no major importing of gravel onto this track, the surface is just the way a real mountain bike track should be. Looping around some contours on the hillsides there are excellent views of Lake Taupo and the Tongariro National Park to the south. Along the Great Lake Trail, listen for native birds and wind in the bushes at one of the nice viewpoints.
